John was fortunate to connect with farm owners Bill and Kathy and he is helping rebuild infrastructure and to transition the farm from conventional management to organically grown pasture and crops. The farm is in the early stages of becoming a baseline for sustainability in the new century.
The foundation of the herd is Ancient White Park cattle, a rare breed original to England. Listed as “threatened” by the Livestock Conservancy, there are only 20 herds of White Parks in America. The White Parks were purchased from Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, Iowa.
The cows are managed to mimic a natural predator-prey system. Electric polywire fencing and daily moves recreate the bunching of large herds of ruminants. Grazed areas are allowed to rest and regrow before the animals return. Soil organic matter is increased with this type of grazing.
